Should I be happy that I finally graduated from Cairo University with a CS bachelor's degree?
It seems like it's the case amongst everyone I know, and I'm wholeheartedly happy for them. They sincerely deserve it.
But is it only me that thinks it's one of the most depressing and daunting experiences to be a CS fresh graduate now?
I was very hesitant to talk about this on a platform where everyone shares their accomplishments and milestones. But I believe a coin has two sides, and this current disappointing state for the tech job market is a side that needs to be talked about. I used all my willpower not to share my utter disgust and disappointment somewhere that's toxically and unrealistically promoting constant accomplishments and progress.
I believe it's not okay for a company to lock up a hopeful candidate in a recruitment process that would last for months, just to ghost them and when asked for feedback, the request gets ignored.
I believe it's disgusting and disrespectful to lead on an optimistic hardworking student for months, constant interviews, pointless leetcode problems, all back to back, just to suck the hope out of this "naive" student, leaving them with a shallow apology "sorry! HR window has decided to close."
How is it okay for companies to not even send a rejection email? Is the time we put into crafting a resume - that will end up discarded - okay? How is it okay that the daily tens of applications a candidate throws out are simply looked upon, neglected and left to hang in the air?
How is it okay to take advantage of candidates' excitement and will to gain any experience, and enslave them for a tremendous amount of hours just to pay them so little? Just because a company pays third world countries' stuck engineers with broken hopes and dreams, does NOT give them the right to use it against them, with no remorse or guilt and just pay them so little but in dollars. If using a country's downgrading financial circumstances to fuel personal profit is not disgusting enough for you, I don't know what will.
I sadly had no choice but to stop applying to jobs online. I don't want to live a life where I'm expected to beg to work from 9 to 5 for a diminished salary.
This is not fair. It's not okay to expect silence and acceptance from candidates when they are explicitly disrespected and degraded emotionally and financially.
If this post ends up used against me, then so be it. I get to be disappointed.
Isn't this humiliating enough not to talk about?
Oh, almost forgot! 🎓 Excited to share that I've officially graduated from Cairo University with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science! Grateful for the journey, challenges, and growth along the way. Ready for the next chapter! 🚀

I didn’t know much about how people are living in Egypt these days. This was interesting to read. There’s an Egyptian named Sammy who appears on Korean TV quite often. Do you know him? 🌿
